Who are we?
We are the gunclub
Suriname, an amateur-sporting gunclub, established in 1966 in
Paramaribo,
Suriname,
South America. We currently have 180 members and we have our own shooting range
at Marina Durga, just outside Paramaribo. We have recently started to actively
promote Practical Shooting (IPSC) and Claypigeon Shooting in Suriname and in the
region.
How can I join?
With owning a firearm
comes great responsibility. Therefore, we have strict rules for the admission of
new members. Firstly every new candidate for membership should be introduced by
at least two existing members. Secondly the candidate is screened by members of
the board and finally after a trial period, the candidate may be balloted as a
junior member.
Is shooting safe?
The shooting sport
does have certain risks involved, as with all other sports. However, with proper
training and by following certain rules and regulations regarding gunhandling,
the shooting sport is considered a safe sport. We aim to train our members in
proper firearm handling. The rules and regulations of the gunclub (in Dutch) may
be downloaded by clicking
here.
However, one should keep in mind that a shooter is
ALWAYS responsible for his/her actions on or off the range.
What is Practical Shooting?
Practical Shooting is
a dynamic form of shooting where the shooter engages in a course of fire, with
certain rules and restrictions. The governing organization is called IPSC
(International Practical Shooting Confederation). There are different divisions
where a shooter may participate, each with certain rules and restrictions. We at
gunclub Suriname
practice IPSC Standard and IPSC Production Division for large caliber handguns.
Check out this
FAQ for more information.
What is IPSC?
IPSC stands for International Practical Shooting Confederation. The motto for
IPSC is DVC: Diligentia,
Vis, Celiteras. (accuracy, strength and speed). More information
may be found on their website:
http://www.ipsc.org/.
We strongly encourage shooters who are interested in IPSC to download the Handgun Rulebook from the aforementioned website, and to take particular note of the main rules on safety, conduct and equipment.
What are the different divisions in IPSC?
For large caliber
handguns, there are currently four divisions in IPSC, each with its own rules
and restrictions. These divisions are: production, standard, modified and open.
For more information, please visit http://www.ipsc.org.
Which IPSC Divisions do you practice?
We at gunclub Suriname
currently practice IPSC Standard and IPSC Production Division for large caliber
handguns. Our IPSC team, TEAM SVS, practices these divisions regularly. Find out
more about TEAM SVS by clicking ~here~ (link not working yet).
What are the rules of the Production IPSC Division?
IPSC Production
Division is probably the most discussed division in IPSC in terms of rules.
Which guns are allowed and which aren’t. What modifications are allowed, to name
just a few. We’ve created a document with rules and regulations, as well as a
specific FAQ for IPSC Production Division for your convenience. You can download
it, by clicking
here.
What are the rules of the Standard IPSC Division?
Click
here to
download the specific appendix from the IPSC Standard Division Rulebook.
What do you need to start shooting IPSC?
You’ll need training, lot’s of it, which incidentally is the fun part. Other
than that, you’ll need a dose of mental preparedness. Shooting is a mentally
draining sport. You have to be focused at all times for your own safety and that
of others around you. Finally, you’ll need to invest in your gear. Keep in mind
that it’s not a gear race, but nevertheless, shooting’s not cheap either.
What is a powerfactor?
Powerfactor is used as a means to differentiate in Major and Minor Powerfactor
for IPSC handgun divisions. The powerfactor of a round is calculated by the
weight of the bullet in grains times the muzzle velocity in ft/s divided by
1000.
What is major and minor powerfactor?
Major and Minor powerfactor in IPSC handgun divisions are only applicable in
IPSC Standard, Modified and Open Division. For Production Division it is not
relevant.
Major powerfactor in IPSC is achieved when the ammunition used, has a minimum diameter of 10mm/.40” with a powerfactor of at least 170.
Minor powerfactor in IPSC is achieved when the ammunition used, has a minimum diameter of 9 mm/.355” with a powerfactor of at least 125.
With use of factory ammunition, or ammunition provided by gunclub Suriname, in aforementioned calibers, the shooter will usually conform to these powerfactors.
Do you provide training?
Yes, we do. We provide training for all our members in pistol, claypigeon and
rifle shooting. For more information contact us via
info@gunclubsuriname.com, or via
telephone: (+597)85.90.900.
I see that you have a shooting event planned, can I
participate if I’m not a member?
That really depends on the event. But essentially, one may only participate
through introduction by an existing member. This member will be held accountable for the actions and behavior of the participant throughout the
event, however, the participant remains fully responsible for his/her actions. The Match Director makes the final ruling on the acceptance of a
non-member entry in a shooting event. For more information on participation in a
specific event, please contact us via
info@gunclubsuriname.com, or via
telephone: (+597)85.90.900.
What is Claypigeon Shooting?
First off, no animals
are involved in claypigeon shooting. A claypigeon is actually a disc made out of
clay which is catapulted into the air with special apparatus. The objective is
to shoot these discs out of the sky with a shotgun. The two main events in
claypigeon shooting are Skeet and Trap.
What is Skeet & Trap?
Skeet is a claypigeon shooting event where two discs are launched. One from the
right and one from the left of the shooter under a specific, angle, height and
speed. The shooter takes several predefined positions and in each position tries
to shoot down both clays.
Trap is a claypigeon shooting event where one or two discs are launched from a position directly in front of the shooter, away from the shooter.
What do you need to start shooting Claypigeons?
You’ll need a legal
and properly working shotgun that can fire two shots in rapid succession. For
example, a double barrel, over-under, pump-action or semi-automatic shotgun.
Do you provide training?
Yes, we do. We provide training for all our members in pistol, claypigeon and
rifle shooting. For more information contact us via
info@gunclubsuriname.com, or via
telephone: (+597)85.90.900.

I have a firearm, can I start shooting at your range?
Shooting at the range for non-members is only allowed after introduction by at least two existing members, and with permission of a boardmember or registered clubtrainer (see the Contact & Information page).
I don't have a firearm, how do I obtain a license?
Firearm licenses in Suriname are strictly governed and issued by the
Attorney-General /“Procureur-Generaal” of Suriname. For longtime members and
members that are actively involved in shooting and competition and first and
foremost, members that have earned the trust of the board, by their
unquestionable conduct, the possibility exists (for these members) to apply for
a permit and the use of a firearm strictly for shooting at the range. The
gunclub Suriname reserves the right to withdraw this permit and the firearm when
deemed necessary.
To obtain a license to legally carry a firearm in Suriname, an application must be sent to the Attorney-General /Procureur-Generaal of the Republic of Suriname.
